Charlie And Lola Author Lauren Child Discusses The Origin Of Characters And Why They're So Loved

There are some children's books that everyone just knows about.

Whether it's because of the characters, the story or the illustrations, they become magical parts of your children's lives that somehow as parents, you fall in love with them too.

Lauren Child, children’s illustrator and author, created the story of Charlie and Lola 15 years ago. The story where a little sister called Lola will ‘not ever NEVER’ eat a tomato, and her brother Charlie’s highly imaginative efforts to change her mind.

Since the first book was published in 1999, the storybooks have had worldwide sales of over three million and tons of children (and adults) have fallen in love with them.

To mark those years of success, Child is hosting the first ever retrospective of her work, at National Trust property Mottisfont in Hampshire. -

If you're nearby or fancy a day trip, The Art of Lauren Child - Adventures with Charlie, Lola and Friends runs from 18 July to 6 September.

The show features 50 original art works from Child's own personal collection including many that have never been seen before.

As part of her celebration, HuffPost UK Parents decided to catch up with the author to find out where those much-loved characters first came from and why we should always be reading to our kids.

Did you always want to be an author/illustrator?

No, I wanted to do lots of different things. I was interested in textiles, ceramics, product design and fine art. I couldn’t really fix on any one thing. What I really wanted to do was write an idea for a film.

I came up with idea of a girl and her family and everyday life that became my book Clarice Bean That’s Me.

So what came first, the writing or drawing?

With the early books, both things came together. I would write and draw at the same time, changing things as I went along and making lots of sketches in my note books. Now, I always write first because I see all the pictures in my head!

The million-dollar question - how did you come up with the characters of Charlie and Lola?

I was travelling with my Danish boyfriend through Denmark on a train and there was a child there with her mum and dad.

She was an incredibly sweet-looking child with wonderful-shaped eyes. There was something about her, the way she was dressed and her mannerisms and expression, and so I drew a picture of her and then I started thinking of a story that would work with that kind of character. That's really where it came from - just seeing somebody that I thought was rather enchanting and then working a story around that character.

When I got home, I sketched a picture of her from memory and set about finding a story that suited her. My boyfriend had a younger sister called Sofie and, when I looked through family albums, I found she bore a resemblance to my pixie girl.

So I drew on tales he told me about their childhood. While Sofie had adored him, he had found her intensely irritating, so she’d invented an imaginary "better brother" called Soren Lorensen. I named my character Lola and Soren Lorensen became her invisible friend.

In those same family albums were pictures of my boyfriend in a T-shirt with different coloured sleeves and his name in flock. And so Charlie took shape.

lauren child

What do you think it is about the two characters that makes them so popular?

I think it’s something to do with the relationship between them and the way they interact.

There is something very reassuring about it. It’s also about everyday life, the simple things that can be a big deal when you're small It's all about having to do things for the first time.

A lot of the time when you're growing up, certainly I found anyway with my sisters, you spend together alone and your parents are doing other things. They might be around but they're not really taking part in your games or discussions or arguments or whatever it is you're doing. It’s a snap-shot of life, acted out with just siblings.

The Charlie and Lola stories are about that whole imaginative side of being a child and we recognise ourselves in the characters. Perhaps that’s why people like them.

The Best Children's Picture Books Summer 2015

What advice do you have for parents who want to get their kids more interested in reading?

I think by reading with them. Sometimes it’s a struggle, you have to show that you are really interested in the story too and make it a cosy and a special time with your children.

My dad used to read stories to us when we were growing up and even when we were much older. I always remember loving that. Audio books are also a good way of getting children interested in reading and books. It gives them a way into stories. I also think films and TV adaptations are good for this to encourage children to read.

Can you tell us some of your favourite children's books?

A particular favourite is The Shrinking of Treehorn by Florence Parry Heide, illustrated by Edward Gorey. I loved the way that the parents aren’t aware of what is happening to Treehorn and the illustrations are wonderful.

I loved Quentin Blake’s illustrations as a child and still do. My particular favourite is Grimble. I also really like John Burningham’s picture books such as Grandpa and John Patrick Norman McHennessy, the boy who was always late.

There’s something pleasantly anarchic about these book that appeals to me I love the way these stories see things from the child’s perspective. One of my favourite chapter books is The Secret Garden. The central character, Mary Lennox, is an unusual heroine. She is very hard to like - rude, selfish, spoilt and not at all beautiful.

She is rather stubborn and curious, and it is these qualities that lead her to seek out the abandoned garden. She sees the beauty in it and nurtures it back to life. It is powerful and beautifully told, and, a hundred years later, the book still feels relevant.

book

How does it feel to be celebrating this milestone?

I'm very excited! I am a big fan of doing the exhibition with the National Trust because we visited their properties such a lot as a family when I was young.

My parents were fanatical gardeners and loved wandering round the houses. I was fascinated by the interiors too, the history of them and the beautiful and interesting objects. I am very excited and pleased to be involved with the exhibition and trail at Mottisfont. The National Trust was very much part of my childhood.

Whether it's shaped like shells, bows or regular spaghetti, nothing says comfort food like a big old bowl of pasta.

If (like us) you love eating pasta, but hate standing around waiting for it to cook, then the above life hack video is for you.

Created by BuzzFeed, the clip shows a clever way to get your pasta soft and ready to eat in a fraction of the time it usually takes.

All you need to do is switch your saucepan for a frying pan. Then, lay your pasta flat in the pan and cover with a thin layer of water. Heat and stir occasionally.

With this method, the pasta will be soft before you know it. Plus you'll cut down on boiling time and, as all the water evaporates away, you'll save time messing around with a colander.

Result!

Cheap Drug Could Help Cut Breast Cancer Deaths By Nearly 20%, Study Finds

A 5p drug used to treat osteoporosis and strengthen bones could hold the key to preventing breast cancer deaths, researchers believe.

Bisphosphonates, drugs used to slow down or prevent bone damage, have been shown to prevent secondary tumours from growing in the bone.

Researchers said the drugs could also reduce the risk of mortality from breast cancer by 18%.

The discovery has been hailed by a charity as one of the "most important steps forward in breast cancer treatment" for 10 years.

breast cancer

Director of the Sheffield Cancer Research Centre, Robert Coleman, who led the study, revealed that his team expected the drugs to prevent secondary cancer. But the fact that it reduced breast cancer deaths by 18% was a larger figure than anticipated.

Researchers analysed data from more than 18,766 women.

The figures showed that the drug could cut the risk of death by 18% in the first ten years after breast cancer diagnosis.

In 2012 in the UK, around 11,600 women died from breast cancer according to Cancer Research UK. But with this drug, more than 1,000 lives could be saved a year.

The study, which was published in the Lancet, found that women benefitted from bisphosphonates regardless of the type they took, the size of their breast tumour, and whether or not the cancer was hormone sensitive.

The drug also seemed to work more efficiently in postmenopausal women, in which one in six deaths was prevented over the course of 10 years.

Findings from the study have been hailed by Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breast Cancer Now, as being "one of the most important steps forward in breast cancer treatment" for 10 years.

"But this time we’re talking about a few pence rather than thousands of pounds, and millions saved by the NHS," she said.

If you've been ogling your hot co-worker for a while now but haven't made a move, we have news for you.

Don't go in guns blazing just yet.

According to science, if you want to date someone who's super attractive then you need to put some serious graft in first.

And by this we mean make friends with said hot person, get to know them and let your relationship organically bloom into something beautiful.

how to date someone hotter than you

Researchers from the University of Texas and Northwestern University analysed 167 couples to see how long they knew each other before dating, and how long they'd been together for.

The appearance of the participants was then judged by undergraduates.

The study revealed that attractive couples were more likely to begin dating within a month of meeting.

Meanwhile couples who had more varied levels of attractiveness (basically one person was hotter than the other) had an increased likelihood of being friends for a while before getting together.

Modern Sex Education Book For Kids Includes Chapters On IVF, Sperm Donation And Caesareans

Sex education books usually involve the stereotypical 'mummy and daddy make a baby' type scenario.

But a new book is educating children on the different ways adults can conceive.

The Amazing True Story of How Babies Are Made depicts accurate illustrations of IVF, sperm and egg donation, as well as addressing premature births and caesareans.

Australian author Fiona Katauskas, 45, said she wanted to make the book "funny but factual", aiming it at children aged between five and ten.

babies

Katauskas told Daily Mail Australia: "I wanted to be a bit more scientific and clearer in my approach, and to show the mechanics of everything. Since 1973 assisted reproduction has become increasingly common and is also part of the story of how the egg meets the sperm... even though they meet in a different way,"

She said she wanted children to be able to see "their own" story in the book, whether they were born early or had same-sex parents.

Although the author admitted a lot of scientific and biological research went into the book, she wanted to keep it light and mildly comical to engage children.

Katauskas admitted the book was less about sex and more about how the egg and the sperm meet in different ways.

We've picked some of the best illustrations that show Katauskas' modern approach to sex education.

11 Signs You're Probably Too Comfortable In Your Relationship

$
0
0
Let's be honest, we all change when we're in a relationship. It happens. Some of you are probably nodding your head whilst thinking about some examples right now as you read this.

After a while we start to get a little too comfortable. We realise that person isn't going to breakup with us for some of our tiny idiosyncracies and that they love us for who we are. Who we really are (ahem) right?

Anyway, I thought I'd put together a list of sure-fire signs that you're probably too comfortable in your relationship from a male perspective. Enjoy!

1. Baby Voice

You know when the baby voice comes out that this relationship means it's going the distance. I've seen even the manliest of men break into some blubbering baby-talking mess when he's with a long-term girlfriend. Hilarious for spectators - embarrassing for the boyfriend.

2. Using the Toilet at the Same Time

Not a fan. I remember back in my early twenties an ex-girlfriend came in and did a poo... A POO whilst I was having a shower. AND she was reading a copy of "Heat" at the same time! Seriously. I couldn't believe it. Needless to say she got dumped (pun intended). But, if you find that this is something going on in your relationship, then yep, you are way too comfortable.

3. Pet Names

"Oh poopy shnooky wooky". A big tell-tale sign that the comfort levels are high. Also, if you have pet names for each other's genitals (I once knew a guy who's girlfriend called his penis "Brad" - of course she never knew that we knew) you might as well just lock yourself down for life.

4. Movie Compromises

"Oh, hun look - 27 Dresses is on!"

"Greeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat".

Pass me the shotgun.

5. Sharing Plates

This happens even on early dates, but when you find you're always ordering together instead of making a decision for yourself, things are well and truly in the "too comfortable" zone.

6. Dates at Home Are Considered Dates

Remember the early days when every date was an adventure? Yeah! Not anymore. The phrase "why don't you just come over at 9 and we'll get some take-away" becomes way too frequent.

7. Farting and Burping

Who needs to hold it in anymore? She's not going anywhere, so just let it all out. Just be weary of the old "Dutch oven". Ah, classic.

8. Granny Undies

She's wearing her granny undies, that means there's good news and bad news.

The good is that she's really comfortable with who she is around you.

The bad is that chances of sex are incredibly slim. Good luck!

9. No Makeup

Huge. She's letting you see her without makeup for the first time? That's it, it's serious!

10. Morning Breath Kisses

That split second decision just before you give her a morning breath kiss. "Mouth open or mouth closed? What level are we at?"

If you've gone for mouth open - you know the answer to that.

11. No More Walking on Egg shells

It started off with "honey, can I get you anything?" after buying her favourite foods for when she stays over. Now it's basically a jar of maionnaise and an old carrot in the fridge and "help yourself".

Where did it all go wrong?

Why I Ended My Affair With Instagram

$
0
0
I have a confession to make and some of you might not take it too easily: my 18-month affair with Instagram, my social media partner has ended, and rather abruptly too.

I decided, for the best reasons too, that we were spending too much time together and we needed some separation. As I didn't want to have an ending with some sort of continuation, we agreed on a total separation, there and then.

There were no angry words or exchanges which might seem unusual, but it was by mutual agreement.

To those of you reading this who want to continue having an affair or a relationship with Instagram, I will not stand in your way or say anything derogatory about it.

But Instagram, you weren't for me.

For starters, we spent much too much time together looking at each other and trying to make ourselves happy, prettier or sexier. What could we do to make us more attractive to the outside world, one of us would continually ask.

Was it clothes, fancy dress, food, baking or animals that would make us the envy of the chattering classes?

We must have done something right along the way though. Although we tried to keep our affair "private" and only invited guests could join our parties when they felt up to it, suddenly I was bombarded by followers of fashion, cooking, horse riding or dog walks.

My Lakeland terrier, Topsy featured in so many posts and she was, in turn, "liked" by so many. I do recall that Freud, the father of psychoanalysis always had one of his little red chows (they were called Jofi and Lun) in the room with him during his therapy sessions. As Martin, Freud's eldest son once recalled: "When Jofi would get up and yawn, my father always knew that the hour was up."

But my dear Instagram, if our ending was too abrupt and sudden, I am sorry about that. For my part, the decision was indeed swift and I now have to stick with what I believe in - that our relationship became obsessive if not compulsive. I felt an enormous attraction to you and that I had to deal with you and your needs and requests every time I looked at my mobile phone or my apps.

And I have a confession to make - now that I am on my own again and single, I am enjoying the free time I have and I know this will hurt, but I don't really miss you that much. I hope you will meet someone suitable in the near future.

I didn't know how to announce our break up to our family and friends, so to some I sent an email to others a text.

One of our mutual friends replied rather sympathetically: "I don't understand. Can't you still be friends and just see each other a bit less? We need you."

Hey, we'll both still be connected to the wider world. For my part, I'll still be blogging - on the Huffington Post, where else?

Pregnancy Discrimination - Can Anything Be Done?

$
0
0
A report by the Equality Commission has today revealed that around 54,000 women a year may face discrimination at work due to pregnancy. It's a scary statistic but one that at least 50% of the population won't be surprised about.

The website Pregnantthenscrewed has been flooded with stories from women sharing their experiences, ask around any toddler group and you will hear plenty more. The really blatant cases that you read about in the news and then the inherent discrimination so commonplace it is barely described as such.

I'm sure for many employers their HR teams will be making sure those boxes on diversity are ticked this week:

We have a policy on diversity - tick

We did some basic training back in 2010 - tick

We have employed (albeit reluctantly) some part time workers - tick

We even have a team that look at diversity - double tick

We have one non exec board member (out of 6) who is female - tick, tick, tick, job done

Here's the thing. All the above is a good start but policies don't work when they are not well implemented. Training can be great but sitting in a 'classroom' for an hour is unlikely to change unconscious bias. If line managers and those making the decisions on important stuff like flexible working applications and promotions aren't challenged, if empathy isn't embraced, ultimately if the culture doesn't change then it's likely that the statistics from such reports will remain.

So what else can be done?

The other day it hit me. Well actually I should probably say Caitlin Moran hit me. Not literally you understand (that would make a better story but would be completely unfounded) but metaphorically, after attending her live show. She talked about a quilt of equality - lots of women all creating smaller individual pieces of change that fit together to make one big fat difference (I'm not sure she would approve of that clunky description but this part was after the interval and the bar...) Basically she inspired me to stop waiting for some momentous change to happen and get doing.

I have returned to work twice following maternity leaves, both times the process was infuriating and slightly soul destroying. Confidence depleated, progression - er not when you 'only' work 3 days, guilty - oh yes definitely, what a bad parent to be leaving my child.

In hindsight the transitions have taught me so much. I have learnt the true power of women supporting other women, of knowing my rights and not being afraid, of how valuable and useful it can be to spend time preparing for such a big change. So finally third time round I learnt to take control of my own maternity leave.

In response to the report a new campaign launches today #worksforme - which aims to help women get clued up on all things maternity. It is a good start and a step in the right direction. More can be done in this area, it is something I am really passionate about. Prior to going off on maternity leave can be so important, which is hard because especially first time round you don't know what to expect but prevention is always easier than finding a cure wherever possible (and I know it isn't always).

I'm not about letting employers off the hook, nor about making women feel inadequate or at fault for the positions they find themselves in. I have been there, I know where I went wrong, my goal now is to ensure other women don't make the same mistakes and get the support they deserve.

(Note to employers - if you are really committed to equality then hand over the control and let those who really know how it feels create change, now that kind of trust would make a difference).

Where possible we should be the ones making decisions for ourselves and our families. Let's create peer support groups within our places of work that challenge any underlying culture of inequality (how amazing could that be, a fact sheet on how to do so will be on the Lifebulb site shortly), supporting each other to have the confidence to challenge the norm, getting clued up on our rights, feeling empowered to own our maternity leave.

Unfortunately if we don't, no one else will and what this report only highlights is that we can't afford to leave it to chance!

Women In Business: Frame Co-Founder, Pip Black, On How She Built A Fitness Empire By Breaking Every Rule In The Book

$

When Pip Black and Joan Murphy first came up with the idea for Frame eight years ago, the London fitness scene was bleak compared to the vibrant and ever-evolving offering on today.

The pair, who were 24 and 26 respectively, had both played competitive sport throughout childhood and university, but the "work hard, play hard" London lifestyle (they worked in media and advertising and liked to drink gin) had started to take its toll, and they were growing uninspired and demotivated by the classes available.

"Back then there wasn't much on offer, apart from a few serious gyms and the odd expensive yoga studio," Pip tells HuffPost UK Lifestyle. "Exercise had started to get very negative connotations associated with it."

She says no studios had seemed to understand that exercising can actually be enjoyable. "Who really wants to plug their headphones in and run on a treadmill staring at a wall after a day stuck staring at a computer?"

They decided to take matters into their own hands and set out on their own to create something fresh, dynamic and, above all, fun.

move your frame
Pip Black (L) and Joan Murphy

To do so they had to shake things up completely, which Pip says was easy because they were completely new to the industry.

"We broke all the rules of the industry as we'd never been in it and, to be honest, we didn't like anything about it at the time," she says.

In March 2009 they opened in their first gym in Shoreditch, east London, and, after weathering a six-month set back due to a road closure preventing access to the facilities, they have grown every year - adding more studio spaces and classes. In 2012, they opened their second location in Queen's Park and September 2015 will see the launch of their third gym, in King's Cross.

They pride themselves in offering a diverse range of fun, high-energy classes, from Rocket Yoga to dance classes such as Frame Rave.

"If we like something we just do it, easy as that!," she says. "We're the target demographic and so the fact that we run the show means that we totally understand our customers and make constant changes to stay ahead of the competition - without having to worry about answering to some crazy hierarchy."

frame

With little experience and few contacts, it hasn't been an easy ride for the duo, but Pip credits their passion for fitness and sheer determination for getting them to where they are today.

Pip says they didn't start off with a lot of money and everything they make is reinvested. "For this reason I think we are quite humble, not like a huge expensive gym with no soul - Frame definitely has soul."

One of the most difficult parts of setting up was employing the right staff.

"Finding instructors was difficult to start as no one was teaching classes how we wanted them and fitness instructors were quite set in their ways," she says. "We started to recruit a lot of dancers and to train them up in fitness as they were generally much better entertainers!"

Now, the Frame family has grown, they employ more than 100 trainers and a team of staff running front of house, PR and marketing.

Pip says no two days are the same. She currently spends a lot of time at their digital agency working on the new website, while Joan liaises with the architects and contractors talking about the site builds.

"There are currently not enough hours in the day so we have to plan meticulously and prioritise, which doesn't help because Joan is a morning person, I'm an evening person," she says.

Since setting up, Pip and Joan have both become mothers: Pip, 32, has a 10-month-old son called Phineus with her parter Peter Prescott, 44; Joan, 34, also has a son, 19-month-old Zayden, with her husband Alex Dullard, 34.

The job is pretty full on but Pip says that becoming mothers has helped her find some work-life balance.

"Between 5.30 and 7pm, when Phineus goes to bed, it's no work (unless there's an evening event) just play time," she says. "I find on the weekend it's best to plan in four hours or so and get childcare and then not work the rest of the time, rather than trying to do both at the same time - then you achieve nothing and just get frustrated.

As for finding time to let of steam and relax, Pip will often choose and exercise class. "Joan and I are obviously both massive believers in exercise and so try to fit in at least 3 sessions per week - this used to be way more but sometimes there just isn't the time any more!"

"Over the past few years more and more operators with similar mindsets have opened studios that aim to offer exercise with a 'twist' to create communities where their customers actually want to go, rather than feel they have to," she says.

But Frame didn't simply latch on to the emerging trend, they set the bar.

Her advice for women looking to set up their own business?

"Make sure you're 100% sure you want to do it and are happy to give up your social life for a few years whilst you get your business up and running," she says.

“Never think that you've nailed it - you need to constantly upgrade and tweak things - nothing is ever perfect.”

Life's a Pitch - The Quest for Equality in Women's Football

$
0
0
There's a stark contrast between what men and women earn in UK football. With a huge boost from the recent Women's World Cup, what does the future hold for the sport?

My biggest regret in life is turning my back on international football. I chose an education instead of the sport. Over a decade later the profile of the women's game has never been higher - but there's still so much to do.

It's a well-known fact that male footballers earn a bob or two. Wayne Rooney is one of the highest paid, netting a staggering £300,000 per week. Theo Walcott takes home £100,000 and Phil Jagielka pockets £50,000 a week.

Compared to the Women's Super League, the difference is staggering. The official WSL website states that "a club can pay no more than four players an annual salary of more than £20k." Only a handful of WSL players earn over the average national wage of £26,500, with many on £20,000 and some WSL players earning the equivalent of £50 per week, according to the BBC.

England Women earn a base-salary of over £21,000 and, if they are lucky enough to also be on a central contract from their club, their overall salary can top £40,000 in a year - well under the amount Phil Jagielka earns in a week.

International call-up and on-field play can also reap rewards. Had England's men's team won the World Cup in Brazil, each player would have taken home £350,000. For England women's team to win the 2015 World Cup, the incentive prize money was ten times less - £35,000.

Most female players work part-time jobs. Chelsea Ladies and England defender Claire Rafferty works as an analyst for Deutsche Bank, telling the Telegraph; "I felt I had to carry on working because of my injuries. If I had one more setback, I'd have nothing."

Siobhan Chamberlain - who holds degrees in sports science and sports nutrition - is employed as a lecturer by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and Katie Chapman, a Chelsea Ladies central midfielder, trained to become a beautician in 2011.

Many England women study alongside playing in order to secure jobs after their career. Forward, Eniola Aluko, studied Law at Brunel University in 2008 and spent the US season break studying for the New York Bar exam in 2010. It's also been widely publicised that midfielder Fara Williams was homeless during her early England career.

Money isn't everything

The relative pittance earned shows that there is true passion for the women's game. If we took away the earnings of male football, would playing be as romanticised?

Cristiano Ronaldo famously refused to celebrate goals in 2012 whilst at Real Madrid, claiming he was "feeling sad" about the "professional situation" at the club. Many saw this as an attack on wages. Ronaldo was the world's tenth highest paid footballer at the time.

It's important to note that the women's game is only 20 years old and - with attendance still low, generating little revenue for clubs - it will take time for the playing field to even out. However, to suggest that the pay gap is anything short of acceptable would be ludicrous.

The future of the sport

Continental Tyres are currently the lead partner for the WSL and energy company SSE have provided a cash injection for the Women's FA Cup, being held at Wembley for the first time in August - an excellent step forward in women's football.

However, sponsorships of players and product endorsements are thin on the ground. If the current interest in women's football continues, brands should see the value in backing players -- both for financial and equality reasons. Here's hoping that BT Sport pick up more WSL games after the success of the World Cup.

The Women's team certainly make better role models than their male counterparts. You'll see very little diving and time-wasting, no bar-brawls, use of prostitutes, drug use or tabloid scandals from the women. Instead you'll get a high level of professionalism and a passion to represent the country.

Off the back of the Lionesses World Cup glory, women's football is thriving. An uprising is happening. Girls and women are starting kick-abouts in playgrounds, parks, sports centres and fields across the UK - follow the #WeCanPlay to get involved.

What I Have Learned From Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift

Literally nobody on the internet said anything about the exchange between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift so I guess it's up to me to fill that cyber-void. I've deconstructed all the buzz on the whole bruhaha so you don't have to. Here's what I have learned:

Feminism is intersectional, whether we get it or not.
Swifty made it about feminism, but she didn't seem to get intersectionality. Feminism is simple, despite all the chatter. Intersectionality just means oppression/discrimination that is experienced through combined social constructs. (E.g. I do not experience sexism in the same way as a black woman because I am white. Her race and gender are so bound together that her experience of sexism reinforces that of racism, and vice versa.) Taylor didn't demonstrate an understanding of intersectionality, she put herself in the discussion whilst ignoring the very real issue of racism in the media. Some would say this ignorance is fairly typical of the insular, white, western feminist movement. This may well be true, but feminism is intersectional, because it's simply the equality of the sexes, that's all. My feminism will be intersectional, or it will not be feminism. The problem isn't feminism, the problem is us.

2015-07-24-1437746480-7686385-20140313tumblr_mlkdmmkrCE1qj4315o1_500thumb.gif

Tay, like me, needs to check her privilege.
Because Swifty didn't seem to understand intersectionality, she didn't check her privilege. Rookie error. This basically means she is white and thin and able-bodied and rich and straight and white again, so the world she inhabits is hers for the taking, hence the VMA nomination. Nicki, on the other hand, recognises the world she inhabits is racist, so no nomination. If you are not sure whether you have white privilege, it's easy: go to a mirror - are you white? If so then you have white privilege. It's so important that we all grow up and recognise that it is not a 'tantrum' for Nicki to point out that performers such as Taylor appropriate black culture whilst enjoying the success that the white media brings her. (I rap, so cultural appropriation is something I need discussed.) To frame this as a 'spat' undermines the issue of racism, which is a less comfortable topic, but lies at the heart of what Minaj was trying to highlight. Nicki made it clear that it was not personal, and indeed Swift could/should use her considerable platform to highlight this issue too, but in order for Tay to understand, she needs to recognise her white privilege.
But that's nuance, and people don't like nuance.

We need to boycott misogynist media.
It's difficult to imagine this happening with men, (despite Bruno Mars' lame tweets to Ed Sheeran) because misandry doesn't surreptitiously pervade every corner of our culture. However, if it did, it would be appropriately discussed and not given the narrative of a 'cat-fight'. Hey, magazines, stop it. These same magazines obsess over women's bodies and make me feel like my soul is dying. (I'm going to stop reading them because I've been meaning to stop thinking of myself as flesh-and-hair-that-is-not-as-good-as-Meghan-Fox's-flesh-and-hair and instead as an actual person with ideas.)

Nothing has changed.
Misogyny in the media is pervasive and damaging and you already know that. Nicki Minaj called out the racism of white skinny beauty standards, but regardless of your race, if you're a woman you gotta be sexy and have a bangin' body. Ed Sheeran is nominated for a VMA but he hasn't had to be sexualised. Ed doesn't have to have a bangin' body because he's a man. Taylor, Nicki, Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry - all these women are hyper-sexualised and applauded primarily for the way they look. Nicki Minaj is an incredible rapper. She is not her arse. Taylor Swift is a mega successful pop star. She is not her legs. The company who own MTV (and therefore the VMA's) is called Viacom. Of the board of directors at Viacom, only three out of thirteen of them are women. At Fox, only two out of twelve are women. That ratio is matched in boardrooms across the media sector. These male-dominated formats shape what we see on our screens. Judging women on the way they look and not what they do is telling women that their image is their worth. Now that the hatchet is buried, maybe Taylor and Nicki could address that.

The World's Best Chocolate Orange Cheesecake

I've always had a little thing for chocolate cheesecake. Maybe it's down to my Jewish roots (the Jewish festival of Shavuot is celebrated by eating cheesecake - #winning) or maybe it's just because it's insanely delicious.

When I was little my favourite thing in the world was a triple chocolate cheesecake from Marks and Spencer - I used to savour every mouthful and finish every morsel. On holidays to America we'd always end up making a subconscious beeline for the Cheesecake Factory and stuffing ourselves silly with their unbelievably tasty (and unbelievably unhealthy) offerings.

And it's not just me - the original Mrs H (or my smother-in-law as I affectionately refer to her) is the ultimate cheesecake fan. At Hollingsworth family events there is always at least one kind of cheesecake, in fact six turned up to dinner the night before my wedding!

So when I started on my mission to a healthier life, I knew that I had to come up with an alternative. We've done a lot of taste testing (it's a hard life hey) and I'm so so happy with the final result. This chocolate orange cheesecake is everything I could ever want in a dessert - it's rich, smooth, chocolately, tangy, sweet, creamy, I could go on and on! In a word, it's just perfect, and without a doubt the best thing I've ever made, so I hope you fellow cheesecake lovers love it too!

P.S. it might seem like there are quite a few ingredients but a lot are used in both the base and the chocolate layer - there's actually only eight in total (excluding water)! We like to keep it simple!

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 1 cup cashews

  • 1 cup oats

  • 1/2 cup dates

  • 4 tbsp cacao powder

  • 4 tbsp coconut cream

  • 2 tbsp water

For the chocolate orange layer:

  • 2 ripe avocados

  • 3 ripe bananas

  • Zest of a medium orange

  • 8 tbsp cacao powder

  • 1/2 cup dates

  • 4 tbsp coconut cream

Blitz the cashews, oats and cacao powder in a food processor until they form a coarse flour. Then add in the dates and blend until the mixture is sticky but crumbly. Finally, add the coconut cream and water and blend once more until it all sticks together. Spread into the bottom of your cake mould and press down evenly, then pop in the freezer so that it sets while you make the top layer.

To make the chocolate orange layer, simply combine all the ingredients to a food processor. Mix until you have a creamy mousse-like consistency. Take the base from the freezer and spoon the chocolate orange layer on top. Place the cheesecake back in the freezer for an hour to allow it to set nicely, then remove it from the mould and store in the fridge.

Garnish with orange zest, rose petals, cacao powder or raw chocolate (to make this simply melt 1/2 cup cacao butter and mix with 3 tbsp maple syrup and 4 tbsp cacao, then drizzle on top of the cheesecake).

Love, D&H xx

Dad Creates Video Game About Young Son's Battle With Childhood Cancer (And It's Heartbreaking)

A father has made a touching tribute to his son, who recently passed away after a long battle with cancer, by creating a video game in his honour.

Developer Ryan Green made 'That Dragon, Cancer', "an adventure game about hope in the face of death", not only as a way to remember his son, but to help open communication and provide support for others going through a similar situation.

Joel, who was Ryan's third son with wife Amy, was first diagnosed with cancer when he was just one years old.

When he was two, doctors broke the heartbreaking news that Joel's cancer was terminal. They said he had just months to live, but Joel lived until he was five years old. He passed away on 13 March 2014.

Writing on the Kickstarter page setup to see the video game to completion, Ryan described 'That Dragon, Cancer' as: "A video game developer's love letter to his son; an adventure game to inspire us to love each other; a voice for those fighting cancer."

This is far from your average video game. As HuffPost Parents points out, there are no levels or points, instead 'That Dragon, Cancer' is more of an immersive experience - an honest depiction of one family's heartbreaking cancer journey.

Parts of the game are set in hospital waiting rooms, while others capture to more upbeat moments of Joel's childhood.

Ryan told the New Yorker in a recent interview: "I want the game to capture the way Joel danced. The way he laughed. The way his brothers treated one another. The affection they have. I want to put those things in the game. He was the sweetest kid. I can’t really articulate…. I hope to capture some of that, something of who he was and is.

"In the end, I guess my greatest hope is pretty simple: that players might care about my son the way that I do."

Beatrice Borromeo Wows In Pink Wedding Dress After Marrying Grace Kelly's Grandson Pierre Casiraghi

Beatrice Borromeo married Monaco royal Pierre Casiraghi in a stunning Monte Carlo ceremony on 25 July, and we can't take our eyes off her dress.

Breaking tradition, the 29-year-old model and heiress wore a pink and gold lace Valentino gown before later changing into a floor-length white gown for her evening party.

Valentino Haute Couture paid tribute to Borromeo's delicate yet sophisticated dress by posting a photo on their Instagram.

A photo posted by Valentino (@maisonvalentino) on

The designers wrote: "The House of Valentino is pleased to announce that Beatrice Borromeo wore a Valentino Haute Couture dress designed by Creative Directors, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, for her civil wedding with Pierre Casiraghi on July 25th at the Prince's Palace of Monaco.

"The wedding gown was created in a pale pink and gold lace silk chiffon."

The sheer pink-tinted dress is laced on top with short, batwing sleeves and gracefully falls down to the floor with lace detail around the edges on the bottom.

The heiress wore pink-coloured floral headband to finish her look.

Borromeo and Casiraghi - son of Princess Caroline, making him seventh in line to the throne - were pictured together after their wedding look effortlessly stylish, but that's no difference to how they usually are.

The bride was later pictured in a floor-length white gown with a low neckline and cut-out sections below her chest.

However, considering this couple has such serious style credentials, we aren't surprised. Here are six photos that prove Borromeo and Casiraghi their fashion credits...

The black and gold

While Borromeo wows in a floor-length gown with matching gold jewellery, Casiraghi wears a simple yet sleek black and white suit with bow tie.

The formal with shades

Borromeo's loose, over-the-shoulder midi-dress with a detailed neckline is so simple, but so on-point.

Casiraghi sports three shades of grey with a deep purple patterned tie - a colour previously in fashion wasteland thanks to Willy Wonka. He totally pulls it off though.

The bold jackets

Most people look like plonkers in puffa jackets. Not these two. Old school, effortlessly cool. Paired with some shades, plain tees and jeans, it's clear they do casual well.

The white trousers

Matching straight-legged white trousers. Not that we condone wearing matching clothes with your boyfriend, but this just works. Mainly because of Borromeo's stunning top.

The teal tie and dress

If there's one thing we've realised, it's that Borromeo and Casiraghi definitely discuss how their outfits could match before they walk out the door. While Borromeo wears a lacey, teal mid-length dress, Casiraghi matches his suit to his girlfriend by adding a teal patterned tie.

13 Little Things That Can Make A Woman Fall Hard For You

$

Glamour recently released their list of '13 Little Things That Can Make a Man Fall Hard for You' and were promptly ridiculed because it was totally offensive to both men and women.

Seemingly jumping out of the 1950s, the guide included things like "let him solve your petty work problem" and "making him a snack after sex" because all men are total stereotypes and women are weak people who can't solve problems, apparently.

We thought we'd make an equally offensive list of 13 little things that can make a woman fall hard for you (you're welcome, chaps).

  1. Buy her a pumpkin spiced latté. All the girls love a pumpkin spiced latté!

  2. Poke her with your erection while in bed. That'll make her horny.

  3. Send her pictures of cute cats to her work email. If she can even get email on her toaster. Because all women work in the kitchen, am I right guys?

  4. Take her shopping and buy her something pretty! Women have been known to give blowjobs in return for diamonds.

  5. Petrol station flowers are affordable, convenient, and they can get you out of trouble!

  6. Stop playing video games to text her. As if you're physically capable of that, am I right lads??

  7. Take her to see Dapper Laughs (even if she doesn't want to).

  8. Buy her a new iron. Women love presents they can use!

  9. Take her out for a Nando's, Perfect for birthdays or anniversaries.

  10. Let her gossip to her friends every now and then, she'll be so thankful you let her!

  11. If you really love her, show her. Stop flirting with random girls on Tinder.

  12. The best way to make sure she knows how you feel is to constantly check her phone and steal her Facebook password. You can never be too careful!

  13. Fart all over her. Pheromones. It's science.
