Fertility Education: The Debate We Need to Have

$

0
The last couple of days have seen much furore and debate over my call for Nicky Morgan and the new Government to add fertility as part of Sex and Relationship Education to the secondary school curriculum. As to be expected with a sensitive issue, my call for young people to be better informed as to their fertility options has prompted intense response from many camps. The point overlooked by many is that my call is for both men and women to be better informed not only about the fertility facts but, just as crucially, prevention of infertility. As well as age, there are a number of factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol, recreational drugs, body weight, STIs, thyroid conditions and mother's age of menopause that can have both short and long term effects on fertility.

We have been successful in reducing teenage pregnancies through education on contraception. Sex and relationship education is for now and fertility education is for the future. Conception and contraception are two sides of the same coin. We need to empower our young people with education on fertility, so that they can stand a better chance of falling pregnant when they choose to. Education empowers.

Through my work at St George's Hospital and at my own IVF clinic, I witness first-hand the anguish for those couples and women who realise they cannot have the family they dreamed of because they were not made aware of the decline of fertility with age and other factors affecting fertility. Although sperm quantity and quality decline with age, this decline in fertility is not nearly as marked as that of women, whose eggs decline in quantity and quality as they get older, especially in late thirties. That's why the age of woman is important when it comes to successful conception, whether natural or assisted. The aim of fertility advice is to have a healthy mother and a healthy full term baby without any future health risks and if possible without the need for fertility treatment. I am not prescriptive that women must have a child at 30, but given the scientific facts, if you have the right partner, are financially and socially stable and physically ready to have a child, then my advice is not to delay trying for a child.

I deeply care about women's health, safety and welfare in fertility treatment and wish to make this journey safer and easier for them. Let me make it clear that I want women to "have it all" and that's why I am promoting early education on fertility. It should be remembered that it is the woman who undergoes fertility treatment even when it is a man's problem. We do not want women to undergo multiple IVF cycles or suffer any health risks if it can be avoided by early education.

There are undoubtedly wider societal issues at play as well. There needs to be adequate levels of access to both maternity and paternity benefits and better childcare. And it is important that society promotes a family-friendly environment. The addition of fertility education is not a substitute for action in other areas, in fact it is complementary. Better education around fertility will empower the next generation to shape society for the better. Knowledge is power.

The bottom line is that I believe that complete reproductive education including fertility issues is the right of all our young people. My experience as a school governor has convinced me of the impact this type of education could have. We need to shift the paradigm from treatment to prevention in fertility. This may take up to a generation to achieve, and so we must start now.

Caitlyn Jenner Gender Transition Baffles BBC As Today Programme's Jim Naughtie Misgenders Star

There are calls today for a leading BBC presenter to be put on transgender awareness training after he mistakenly referred to Caitlyn Jenner, the reality TV star and ex-Olympic athlete formerly known as Bruce Jenner, as 'he/she' live on air.

Jim Naughtie, 63, was accused of "offensive" remarks after bungling a report into Caitlyn's rapidly growing Twitter following on Wednesday morning on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Jenner, the step-parent of Kim Kardashian, has announced publicly that she has dropped her previous male identity, and wishes to be known as Caitlyn, with the female pronoun "she" and "her".

But interviewing another journalist from the BBC's Trending service, Naughtie said: "Now, this is complicated. He used to be called Bruce, but he's now a woman."

Caitlyn Jenner's first magazine cover

The BBC Trending reporter, Anne-Marie Tomchak, said: "People might know Bruce Jenner from winning a US Olympic gold medal back in 1976, but now he is known, or she is known, as Caitlyn Jenner."

"And he's got a million followers in four hours?" replied Naughtie, using the male pronoun again, though he later asked: "Has she said anything interesting yet?"

The radio host then suggested that people were not following Jenner on Twitter because of an interest in transgender issues, but because "he/she is a celebrity".

Naughtie's remarks prompted disbelief, with many people on Twitter saying that he needed some transgender awareness training so he could understand that Jenner is now a "she".

One commenter said that Naughtie sounded "uncomfortable with modernity" while another asked, "Who uses he/she these days"?

The mistake follows Fox News anchors misgendering Jenner, referring to her as Bruce and laughing at her transition, with one host calling it "Rome. Final days."

Fox presenter Dagen McDowell said of Jenner: 'He looks hot. Or, she looks hot, rather.'

Orgnaisations such as GLAAD, which worksfor LGBT and trans equality, have been advising the media about how to refer to people who have transitioned from male to female - using female pronouns and their female name if requested.

But it seems that Naughtie didn't get the memo. He has now apologised after the segment.

GLAAD has issued a useful updated tip sheet for journalists after Jenner's transition.

"By sharing her journey with the world, Caitlyn Jenner is accelerating acceptance of transgender people everywhere and reminds us all how important it is to live as your most authentic self,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.

"For a transgender person to step into the world as his or her authentic self is a moment of tremendous freedom," said Nick Adams, GLAAD's Director of Programs, Transgender Media.

"The world can now see what Caitlyn Jenner has always known, that she is - and always has been - a woman."

These Period Pants Stop Leaks So Women Can Get On With Their Lives Whether It's That Time Of The Month Or Not

Let's face it, most of the time sanitary towels and tampons serve their function very well. But sometimes they're a bit of a faff to use and other times they just don't bloody work (excuse the pun).

When Miki Agrawal had to cut an important business meeting short because she'd leaked blood onto her white skirt, she knew that something needed to be done to make women's sanitary products more effective.

“I thought to myself, why isn’t there underwear that is leak and stain resistant? And wouldn’t it be great if they did?” she told Mamamia.

And that's when THINX underwear - a collection of absorbent, leak-proof pants - came into being, designed specifically for women on their periods.

period

The underwear line combines the effectiveness of sanitary products and comes in three styles: thongs, normal pants and hipster briefs.

It uses patented technology which can hold up to two tampons-worth of blood (depending on the style), but with normal, thin material rather than a reinforced nappy situation.

Currently, the collection is designed to be used alongside sanitary products and act as a double layer of protection against embarrassing leaks.

But the vision for the future is to replace sanitary products completely. And there's even talk of inventing pants with additional heating pad inserts that'll help calm hellish cramps.

period pants

The three entrepreneurs behind the wondrous invention - Antonia Dunbar, Miki Agrawal and Radha Agrawal - have created a brand that they hope will eliminate period taboos and empower women.

"We see a world where no woman is held back by her body," says the THINX website. "We will work proudly and tirelessly until every single girl has an equal opportunity for the brighter future she deserves."

"By reimagining feminine hygiene products to provide support, comfort, confidence, and peace of mind, we aim to eliminate shame, empowering women and girls around the world."

What's more, the company is helping women in developing countries by donating a reusable menstrual pad to AFRIpads for every pair of pants purchased.

One word: Awesome.

Pregnant To Baby In 90 Seconds: Father Records Time-Lapse Video Of Wife's Pregnancy To "Settle Nerves"

It's amazing how everything changes during nine months of pregnancy and one dad-to-be decided to capture it all - in 90 seconds.

After finding out his wife, Monique, was pregnant, Byron Louie took a photo of her in the same place every day until the baby was born.

He told Buzzfeed: "This was a great way to help settle my nerves during the pregnancy. As a first time father, I was nervous the whole time.”

The father-to-be wrote on the YouTube channel: "When I found out my wife was pregnant, I thought it would be a great opportunity to capture her growth via photography, but what I really started to notice was how things started to change around me."

f

The time-lapse video captures Mrs Louie standing in the same spot for her whole pregnancy, yet the size of her bump isn't the only thing that changes.

Throughout the nine months, you see the bedroom transform into a nursery. Blank walls to coloured walls and bare shelves become filled with baby essentials.

ds

The couple's dogs, named Dunder and Munster, feature throughout the film, too.

You can see them sitting down and watching the couple prepare and also trying to help.

ds

The short film captures Mrs Louie's baby shower, the building of the cot and even the couple picking up their bag and leaving for the hospital.

They turn out the lights and their dogs wait patiently for them to return.

fds

At the end, the couple walk in with their newborn son, much to the excitement of Dunder and Munster.

The final shot is the mother standing with her son, in the ready-to-go nursery that we just witnessed being built.

fds

Doesn't it make you want to do the same?

Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden from Emmerdale are expecting their second child.

The couple, who play Debbie Dingle and David Metcalfe in the popular soap announced their news on Twitter in the best way.

The 27-year-old actress and her fiancé already have a five-year-old son, Buster who was a central part of their baby news announcement.

Webb uploaded a black and white photo with Buster behind a sign that said "Only child expiring Dec 2015".

The couple are also featured in the photo with Wolfenden holding a sign with an arrow pointing at Webb's stomach and the caption: "Baby# 2".

Webb wrote: "Here we go again..." on the tweet to her 351,000 followers.

It seems her fans were very excited about the news. One woman wrote: "WHAT OMG CONGRATULATIONS OMG SO HAPPY FOR YOU."

Wolfenden tweeted the same photo from his personal account followed by a thank you message for all the messages they've received.

He then tweeted some not-so-exciting news about the laminate flooring in his caravan, before asking his fans: "What are the congratulations for, the baby or the flooring?"

The couple have had a slightly rocky road, as they split earlier in the year.

Wolfenden told The Mirror back in April: “It was never a permanent split, we just needed some time apart. Sometimes life just gets on top of you.

"We had a terrible two-year-old at the time and needed time to look at what we had but it was the best thing we could have done."

He added that although they are still discussing a wedding, it's not something they are desperate to do tomorrow - but they would like to get married on a beach abroad.

Well, now a baby is on the way they have a whole lot more planning to do aside from the wedding. Congrats to the couple!

With two daughters and one son, the Mysterious Girl singer said he was not bothered whether he had a girl or boy, although he did say that he had initially wanted a boy when MacDonagh was pregnant with Amelia.

He said in the interview: "I wasn't gutted – I was happy – but I've fallen so in love with her that I'd happily have another girl."

MacDonagh gave birth to Amelia, on 7 January this year.

However since the birth, the couple have kept their life quite private, sharing few photos of baby Amelia.

There's something a little unnerving, yet equally hilarious, about hearing your grandma swear. (Or someone else's grandma, for that matter.)

When Elite Daily put a handful of grandmothers in front of the camera and let them loose on celebrities with the game "Fuck, Marry or Kill", the end result was always going to be good.

    And boy was it ever.

    grandmas play fuck marry kill

The game, if you haven't heard of it, involves saying whether you would f*ck, marry or kill the person on the card.

"I would marry George Clooney because he's handsome, funny and rich," says one woman. While another says: "Idris Elba? Fuck for sure."

"I think I would fuck 2 Chainz because I like his girth," says one lady, with the most serious expression on her face. "He's a big guy and looks like he could take me good."

While another adds: "I don't wanna kill any of these guys. I wanna fuck them all."

The women discuss what they would do to singers, actors and presidents, before moving on to dictators and serial killers.

    And there's no holding back.

The Number Of Teenagers Being Admitted To Hospitals For Eating Disorders Has Nearly Doubled

    $
    0
    0
The number of hospital admissions across the UK for young people suffering from eating disorders has nearly doubled in the last three years, according to the NHS.

The admissions have increased from 959 13 to 19 year olds being admitted into hospital in 2010/11 to 1,815 cases in 2013/14.

Despite the increase not being drastic, mental health experts have claimed that the rate of increase (89%) is mirrored by a larger number of cases that don't go to hospital.

The increase is said to have worsened due to extreme academic and social pressure along with misleading online images.

Emily Faint, a first year student at the University of Bristol, has experienced struggles with her relationship with food since she was 13.

"Social media can have an absolutely devastating effect on people with eating disorders," she told HuffPost UK.

Faint believes several social media outlets could be a main reason for the increase in patients being admitted into hospital, saying: "Seeing Instagram pictures of girls I know showing off their incredible figures can sometimes send me into a spiral of self-loathing and trigger the impulse to severely restrict my eating."

The university student reacted to the doubling of eating disorder patients with "great sadness", but Faint was "absolutely not surprised".

"Is it any wonder that we are raising generations of people to obsess over their own figures?

"If our society began to focus more on what people have done, rather than what they look like, I think we would live in a much more supportive and healthy world."

She also feels there is a permeating effect of "a body-centric world that is bolstered firmly by the advertising industry that feeds on our insecurities or, in some cases, cultivates them from scratch."

Imogen Smith from the UK-based charity, Anorexia Bulimia Care, spoke to Huffington Post Young Voices about the "academic and social pressure and inescapable media messages" that has led to the increase in patients being admitted to hospital.

"More preventative work is urgently needed to ensure young people in particular are given the support and practical strategies to safeguard their emotional wellbeing," Smith says.

Smith expresses that this increase is an issue of priority from a government perspective. "The recent cuts to the mental health budget, especially in light of these new figures, prove that we are still not prioritizing mental health."

The mental health charity believes that there is still a common misconception when it comes to eating disorders, "They are still regarded by many as a lifestyle choice, rather than life-threatening."

Smith suggests that there needs to be "Improved access to services, a joined-up approach to treatment and health professionals with a consistent level of training and insight."

The charity says these improvements should be on the "immediate agenda".

According to Anorexia Bulimia Care, the reason for the increase is said to be because "Eating disorders are the only illnesses we know where patients are told to go away, without support or advice, because their BMI isn’t critical enough."

Rachel Egan, 23, suffered from anorexia, depression and anxiety between the ages of 14-20. Egan recovered from anorexia at the age of 20, and says that the main reason for her recovery was she was going through a serious health scare and realised "how much damage she was doing to her body".

"I decided that an eating disorder was no way I wanted to go on living my life and made my third and final attempt at recovery."

Egan claims that going into hospital at the age of 14 "saved" her life.

Anorexia and Bulimia Care have said although beneficial, being admitted into hospital is "a traumatic experience for individuals and their families, but often it is the only way where medical, psychological and dietetic support can be combined and the life of the patient, preserved."

Egan considers her four years of counseling and psychotherapy to be highly beneficial throughout her recovery. She found a passion in writing and volunteering that helped her on the path to recovery.

"I started volunteering for mental health charities and I wrote blogs on how to support somebody with an eating disorder and I gained a lot of self confidence from doing this and it has helped me stay well."

"I think finding the right therapist is really important to recovery – somebody you trust and can connect with," says Egan.
She recalls putting "print affirmations and inspirational quotes" around her room to reaffirm positive thoughts throughout her day.

Egan believes that the government has a long way to go in regards to improving mental health services, she thinks that eating disorders should be "held/assessed to the same standard/extent as physical health services. We need to treat people earlier, not six months down the line when they are at a crisis point."

Freya Chandler, 15 , told Huff Post UK that her struggle with Anorexia has made her realize how important life is, "I cherish moments of freedom, and little things that i took so for granted before i was unwell - even like being able to go for a run down the street, or grab a coffee in a shop."

Chandler says , "Most importantly, having anorexia has enabled me to view the media and adolescent pressures in new lights; what may not have any affect on one individual can have a completely different outcome on another."

The teen recalls the first time she realized that social media had a negative effect on her mental health, "There was a need to get the latest pictures from whatever account i was using to motivate my "fitness journey... I felt depressed and uncomfortable in my own skin - wanting to be any of the lovely gorgeous people i would see online."

Chandler describes her experience in hospital as "odd", as life away from home proved to be difficult. "Being young and vulnerable, it is all too easy to almost 'adopt' staff as surrogate parents."

Chandler states that the entire process of recovering after being admitted into hospital, ultimately depends on the individual. "After being discharged, I immediately relapsed. It was months later until I finally decided to take the plunge and recover for myself, by myself. Different things work for different people."

The student from Guildford agrees with many other sufferers, stating that there needs to be major improvements from the NHS service. "More time needs to be invested into individuals that are struggling, and a concerted effort from all professionals needs to be put in to help keep someone in crisis from out of hospital. It often doesn't feel as if the sufferer's views are taken into account, and it is all so wrong."

Chandler says that despite that constant struggle that she has to cope with, she is "determined" to finish her journey to full health. She hails recovery as being vital, "Getting anorexia isn’t a choice; no way. But recovery is."

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, The Royal College of Psychiatrists said there is an "unprecedented" rise in the number of people suffering with eating disorders.

Dr Carolyn Nahman, spokesperson for The Royal College, says she is concerned about the possible fatal consequences of vulnerable teenagers looking at pictures of "ideal bodies" on social media. Dr Nahman says the extreme pressure that these young people put themselves under is worrying.

The increase is said to have worsened due to extreme social pressure and misleading online images, according to The Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The Royal College have said that these images are putting insecure and vulnerable teenagers under immense pressure about their own body image, and it leads them to have a clouded image of what the 'perfect body' should be.

Nahman explained the consequences of this type of social media: "Young people who look at these images often develop body image dissatisfaction, quite low self esteem, because they're constantly comparing themselves to these perfect images."
"This is a risk factor for disordered eating and more serious eating disorders which can prove fatal".

The Royal College of Psychiatrists believe that education is the key to fighting this problem, for both parents and sufferers.

Sprinkles The 32lb Cat Was Abandoned By Her Owners, Now An Animal Shelter Hopes To Get Her Fighting Fit

The global obesity crisis isn't just affecting humans. And Sprinkles the 32lb cat is living proof.

The four-year-old feline from the US weighs more than a toddler.

After being abandoned by her owners, she's been taken in by a local animal shelter where staff have put her on a strict diet and exercise regime to help her battle the bulge.

    sprinkles

"This is an obscenely overweight cat," said Stacy Olandt, 71, from SOS Sea Isle City Cats in New Jersey, USA. "She could not walk when we got her and she is still unable to roll over.

"This isn’t just a pudgy cat – this is a medical issue, overweight cat.

"Our vet has been in practice for more than 40 years and he has never seen such a fat cat."

Typically, a cat of her breed should weigh between 11 and 13 pounds. But Sprinkles is nearly triple that.

The four-year-old puss was found in a foreclosed house before she was taken to New Jersey animal shelter who then sent her to the cat shelter.

"We didn’t know anything about her owners," added Olandt. "I think it’s pretty clear that they didn’t know how to properly take care of a cat.

"She is constantly craving attention and is so overweight that we would surmise that she was left alone to feed and eat too much."

Sprinkles' massive weight has also led to other health complications.

"When we first got her she had fleas and ear mites," said Olandt. "Her little backside was covered in urine burns because she could not reach around to take care of herself.

"She has the typical problems of a very overweight human, her joints are compromised, her heart is being stressed and she is simply not very mobile."

    Story continues below...

Sprinkles was uninterested in cat food when she arrived at the rescue centre – which led staff to believe that she was being fed human food from the table by her previous owners.

Olandt added: "Our vet has developed a specialist science diet food which we will be switching her to. That will be very carefully measured so she loses weight carefully over the next year and a half."

Along with a specialist diet the feline will soon be going under the knife to try and shift some excess skin.

"Her vet will do a pro-bono tummy tuck because she will probably have skin hanging on the floor," said Olandt.

"We are now hoping that she will get adopted into a home where she can become the centre of attention."

Sprinkles may be losing weight but many of the ladies who volunteer at the centre still struggle to manoeuvre her.

Bravissimo are hosting a bra fitting event for transgender people in their Oxford Circus store on Margaret Street, London.

The event was suggested by a fitting consultant at the lingerie store after she discovered that some of the transgender community felt there was nowhere they could go that would make them feel comfortable during a bra fitting.

The evening event aims to provide a private environment with experienced fitters for those who would prefer to be fitted in this way.

'Weekend Warriors', a documentary following five men as they attempt to conquer the 12 mile military-style obstacle course, Tough Mudder, is coming to BBC Two on Wednesday.

In a true test of endurance, 'mudders' face barriers including 12 foot walls, mud-filled trenches, giant skips of ice and even electrocution.

As well as following the participants exhausting regimes as they prepare for the race, the documentary sets out to explore the reasons behind why the men are putting themselves through the gruelling course.

Among those taking part is a man struggling to come to terms with his recent divorce, a man who was left heartbroken by an ex, a father and son hoping to rebuild their relationship, an ex-army personal trainer and two builders who have left their training right until the last minute.

    Awareness Is All

Recently I've been giving a lot of thought to my take on feminism. It informs most of my blog posts, but I generally don't use the word because I know it can attract unwanted attention.

Today I'm saying it out loud. My name is Lisa and I am a feminist. I haven't always been, but it's become an important part of my life in the past few years.

Last week I went to the launch of Polly Vernon's Hot Feminist book. She is a journalist I really enjoy keeping up with - she is a strong voice in contemporary British culture and I'm interested in what she has to say. However, she is in favour of a 'don't sweat the small stuff' take on women's rights, stating that she's quite happy to let a bit of manspreading, all-male panel shows and wolf-whistling go by, in order to concentrate on the 'big' issues of rape, the pay gap, and abortion rights. She states that she loves fashion, beauty and staying skinny, but maintains that these are things she does primarily for herself. At the same time she says she loves being sexy and fanciable to men. Hmm.

Although I rather enjoyed her book, I don't agree with her on everything. To me, all of the small stuff that objectifies and demeans women gives rise to the big stuff like rape culture, and there is no doubt that an urge to be sexy and fanciable to men comes from socialisation among women to do so from a young age.

This is when I realised what sort of feminist I am - one that advocates awareness. I am all in favour of women doing exactly what they want - whether it's being a housewife, making a living in sex work, living for fashion or a being a glamour model - as long as they know WHY they have the urge do those things. We've been socialised to want to please men, be sexy and beautiful for them and be their homemakers while they go out to work. If you decide to turn that into a way of life or a way of making a living, then that is your right, but just know why you're doing it and be happy.

Similarly, men have been socialised to objectify girls and women, to see them as something they are entitled to comment on, touch and have sex with. Relatively few men are aware of that fact, which is why there is a such a backlash from them when we refuse to accept their comments or have sex with them, or when we say we want Page 3 removed from our papers and more women on panel shows. We're rejecting a thing that is so ingrained in our culture that many people, men and women, refuse to believe it's actually there. They think we're making a fuss.

I usually point these people in the direction of Laura Bates' excellent 2014 article. The very first comment, that 'this is not an issue specific to any gender', cites the statistical evidence (from 2012) that floors any argument to the contrary. Women are not yet equal to men in any sexual, political, or economic arena and yet feminists are continually asked to prove that what they're talking about is real with yet more facts and statistics.

To me it feels like the science vs creationism argument - the science behind feminism is so obvious to me that saying that it doesn't exist feels like I'm arguing with someone who maintains the world was built in seven days by a man with a beard in the sky.

I can understand why men feel under attack from feminists because we are directly attacking the male bias in our society - otherwise known as 'patriarchy'. It's not their actual individual fault that it's there, but many men feel as though we are saying it is. We're not. They're a victim of it too - does no one think that there is a correlation between the high rate of suicide among young men and the pressure on them from a young age conform to traditions of masculinity?

If you've grown up in a culture of male privilege and entitlement, where you are the privileged one, then you're not really going to have a clear counter-view you, are you? Just accept that, and be aware that this social system has an effect on you, as well as all the women around you. If you're a young woman who thinks there's no need for feminism because 'we're already equal', just know that we're not. Yet. If you're a young man who says he has a 'problem with feminists', stop and think about what you are saying. You are saying that you don't approve of equality for women. Most men I've met who've said that clearly don't believe in inequality.

Awareness, awareness, awareness. That's all I'm saying.

    This is my feminism.

A photographer who spontaneously captured a stunning shot of two newlyweds kissing in front of Tower Bridge, has managed to track down the couple in question - all thanks to the power of social media.

Saber Miresmailli from Vancouver, Canada was on holiday in the UK when he saw the couple kissing with Tower Bridge in the distance.

He told CBC news: "I was in a moving car, with no flash but somehow they just looked so beautiful and the lighting was perfect. I had a ten second window to take the photo. It was pure luck I got it."

A request to the Facebook Nation: I was on a moving car in London , UK on May 16, 2015 around 8PM when I saw this lovely...

Posted by Saber Miresmailli on Sunday, 31 May 2015

The magical shot showed the couple kissing in the foreground with Tower Bridge pictured behind, slightly out of focus.

Miresmailli added that he didn't see a photographer with the pair, so wanted to pass the photo on as a wedding gift.

On 31 May, the photographer took to Facebook to try and locate the couple, and - after his post was shared more than 270,000 times - he managed to track them down.

In a Facebook post published on 2 June, the photographer wrote: "Ok! Seems we managed to find our couple.

"Congrats to Laura and James who are now on their honeymoon. I wish you guys many many years of happy and prosperous life. Will send you the picture when you come back."

N'aww! We do love a happy ending.

Johnny Depp has been announced today as the new face of Christian Dior Parfums.

This is the first time ever the actor has agreed to be the face of a men's fragrance, and what better way than to join the likes of Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman at the French fashion house.

The House of Dior has enlisted François Demachy, the nose behind a number of their fragrances including Dior Homme and Miss Dior Cherie, to compose the new cologne.

Depp is currently on set reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean film, but by the looks of it he managed to ditch the bandana to shoot the first official campaign image (above).

Nothing is yet known about the fragrance itself but if Johnny was willing to put his name to it, we're guessing it smells pretty good (or like rum, treasure, the open seas etc etc).

The 51-year-old actor has also been busy filming with a star-studded ensemble cast in Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods and will next be seen starring in Scott Cooper’s Black Mass, slated for release this coming September.

Caitlyn Jenner Petition Seeks To Revoke Athlete's 1976 Olympic Gold Medal

A petition set up on Monday calls for the International Olympic Committee to revoke Caitlyn Jenner’s 1976 Olympic Gold medal. Caitlyn, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, won the coveted gong competing in the decathlon in Montreal. She revealed she was transgender last month, appearing on the cover of Vanity Fair this week.

Jennifer Bradford, who started a petition, argues that as Jenner “always believed herself to be truly female” her medal was won “in violation of committee rules regarding women competing in men’s sports.” The petition currently boasts around 3,000 signatories and has spawned a hash tag #givebackthegold.

    The full text reads:

It has recently come to light that gold medalist Bruce Jenner is in fact transgender, and therefore, identifies as a woman. We congratulate Ms. Jenner on these new developments and wish her the best. However, this creates somewhat of a problem as Ms. Jenner (as talented as she is) claims that she has always believed herself to be truly female, and therefore, was in violation of committee rules regarding women competing in men’s sports and vice versa. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we must ask whether or not it is proper that Ms. Jenner should retain her Olympic records in light of this, as we must now either claim that Bruce Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner are two entirely different people (which we know is not true), or that Bruce Jenner was, in fact, a woman participating in a men’s event. It is only fair to all involved that women receive their credit as champions of the Decathlon and that the men racing Ms. Jenner are not expected to compete with a superior, streamlined being such as herself.

We urge Ms. Jenner to support the transgender community by giving up the medals earned by competing against the wrong gender.

Thank you, and congratulations to Ms. Jenner for her courage!

Good things come to those who wait. And there is no one more deserving than Ali Smith, who scooped the £30,000 Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction on 3 June.

This comes after the author missed out on a string of high-profile literary awards including the Man Booker Prize and the Folio Prize in the last 12 months.

The writer, who picked up the award at an event in the Royal Festival Hall on London's Southbank, has been acclaimed by the critics for her novel 'How To Be Both', which examines the lives of a Italian renaissance painter and a modern-day teenager mourning their mother.

When asked how it felt to receive the award, Smith told BBC News: "It's unbelievable, it's glorious and it feels like an astonishing fluke. It was such a strong, versatile shortlist, and I can't believe this has happened."

Speaking about Smith's novel, Shami Chakrabarti, who chaired the judging panel, said: "Ancient and modern meet and speak to each other in this tender, brilliant and witty novel of grief, love, sexuality and shape-shifting identity."

Smith, who was made a CBE in the New Year Honours List, was born in Inverness but now lives in Cambridge.

Her story pipped novels by writers including Sarah Waters and Anne Tyler to the post.

The award, previously known as the Orange prize, is open to all women writing in English.

Previous winners include Zadie Smith for On Beauty, Lionel Shriver for We Need To Talk About Kevin and last year's recipient Eimear McBride for A Girl Is A Half-formed Thing.

Its co-founder, novelist Kate Mosse, said: "In this, our 20th year, it is wonderful to see our partnership with Baileys going from strength to strength.

"Our retail and media partnerships in 2015 have been hugely successful in promoting outstanding fiction by women to an even wider range of readers, both in the UK and throughout the world."

Having Children Makes Us Happier, New Report Reveals

The happiest people in Europe are those who live in big families, according to a new report.

Two thirds of people who live in families headed by a couple with three of more children considered themselves to be happy, according to the Eurostat flagship report on the Quality of Life.

The study found that large families are also more satisfied with their lives and have stronger personal relationships than most people.

    big happy family

The major study carried out by the EU's statistics arm found that 66.8% of homes with two adults and three children said they had been happy "all the time" or "most of the time" over the four weeks before they took the survey.

Just under two thirds of smaller families with one or two children reported being happy "all the time" or "most of the time".

Which, to be honest, is a very slight difference to those with more children.

Our guess is that the times parents are the least happy is when they're child is having a tantrum, or they're tripping over LEGO bricks left, right and centre.

The researchers who put together the report said these findings come at a time when parents are having fewer children.

The Office for National Statistics revealed that two decades ago, 17% of parents had three children, compared to only 14% now.

Married couples, according to recent UK figures, have an average of 1.79 children, while cohabitee parents average 1.62.

The least happy people were women aged over 65 who lived alone, among whom more than one in five said they rarely felt happy.

There were differences between the happiness levels reported by people in different countries in Europe. Luxembourg, Norway and Switzerland showed high values of overall life satisfaction.

Britain scored slightly above-average levels of overall life satisfaction – 7.3 out of 10 compared to an EU average of 7.1.

Many of the correlations between happiness and life experiences will come as no surprise, such as higher levels of satisfaction was linked to a higher level of income, while unemployment was associated with very low levels of happiness.

Good health rated higher on the happiness measure and material living conditions and social relationships were also related to someone's happiness.

The report used happiness measures, which are based on scores out of 10 given by people asked a series of questions about their wellbeing.

So although bigger families contribute to higher happiness levels, the difference between one to two children and three or more children was small.

Our conclusion? Children in general make us happier...

The prospect of any kind of surgery can be horrendously daunting and when your manhood is involved, this feeling increases tenfold.

But for one man who was due to undergo a vasectomy, his mum had the best way to calm those nerves and say goodbye to his swimmers in style... with a hearty dose of humour (in the shape of a tasty-looking cake).

    View post on imgur.com

Reddit user, Brute1100, uploaded an image of the homemade vasectomy cake with the caption: "I'm having a vasectomy tomorrow and my mom got me a cake."

The cake shows a submarine in the sea, surrounded by fancy piping, with the caption: "So long boys."

While it's a little tongue-in-cheek for something which could be deemed a fairly touchy subject, we can't help but think the cake side of things definitely sweetened the deal.

    What a top mum!
