Blue Has Been Revealed As The World's Favourite Colour

$

We may have different weather, foods, educations and cultures, but there's one thing the world agrees on: our favourite colour.

A YouGov survey conducted in 10 countries across four continents and found that we all have a soft spot for the colour blue.

The poll was conducted in the UK, Germany, USA, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

In Britain, 33% of people named blue as their number one choice, while 15% chose red and 14% chose purple.

rainbow unbrella

Despite blue coming out on top as the world's favourite colour, more men voted for blue than women.

In the UK, 40% of men said blue was their favourite colour, compared to 27% of women.

However, more women named blue as their favourite colour than they did pink, proving that old gender stereotype that "blue is for boys and pink is for girls" is a load of crap.

So, why do we love the colour blue so much?

According to Leslie Harrington, executive director of The Colour Association of The United States, if we look to nature, blue is seen in the ocean and the sky, which may mean it has a calming effect.

"Psychologically, blue is the opposite of red, it lowers blood pressure," she previously told HuffPost Healthy Living.

"Blue is also associated with trustworthiness, strength and dependability - hence, the blue power suit because it projects that image of dependability and trustworthiness."

Interestingly, although the second most popular colour varies from place to place in the YouGov survey, it's always one of three other options.

Green was second in Thailand, China and the United States, red was second in Indonesia, Singapore, Germany and Britain and purple was second in Hong Kong. In Malaysia and Australia red and purple tied for second place.

Melia Barcelona Sky, Barcelona - Review

For our second night in Barcelona, we caught the Metro over to the other side of the city arriving at Poble Nou. For those who haven't been to Barcelona before, the Metro is extremely easy to use and is a quick and cheap way to get around the city. Compared to the London tube, it is a lot easier to get to grips with and you can buy a travel card to use between you that lasts 10 trips for only 10 Euros, which served us very well during our visit.

The Melia Barcelona Sky hotel was just a short walk from Poble Nou station and very easy to find - you just look up! The hotel building is a tall skyscraper that almost looks like a puzzle piece with it's two different height rectangle shapes next to one another. Situated in a more residential and business district, the area didn't have the same vibey city feel as a lot of Barcelona but it felt a bit more local and had the added advantage of only being a 10-minute walk to the seafront.

Our room at Melia Barcelona Sky was on one of The Level floors, which meant we had a bedroom on a high floor and also had access to a private lounge on the 25th floor where you could enjoy complimentary canapés and drinks throughout the day and a more private breakfast in the morning. We were also able to check in here, which was a leisurely process where we sat enjoying a glass of cava enjoying the amazing views across the city.

Situated on the 23rd floor, our suite had similar views with huge windows across the front and you could see the sea from our bedroom. The suite featured a lounge area with sofa, iPod dock and speaker, desk and minibar and a spacious bedroom with huge bed in the middle of the room, a chaise longue and TV. Off this was a walk-in wardrobe with dressing table area and bathroom with rain shower, a bath and double sinks. It was a great sized room and the decor was bright and modern.

After checking in to our room, we decided to have a look around the rest of the hotel. Above on the 24th floor, was Dos Cielos restaurant, where we had a table booked for that evening, and an outdoor bar, which would have been lovely for a drink but it was quite windy on the day we were there. There was also a small but cosy spa and an outdoor pool area lower down in the hotel which had a long swimming pool with loungers and day beds spaced around it. On the ground floor was a restaurant, where breakfast was also served, and bar area, and both were quite busy in the middle of the day.

Since we were so close to the beach, we decided to have a stroll to the seafront and had a nice walk and drink at Port Olympic before catching the Metro to Jaume, to visit El Born where we enjoyed our first Spritz of the holiday.

We arrived back at the hotel and enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in The Level lounge before retiring to our suite to get ready for dinner at Dos Cielos - look out for this review coming tomorrow!

After a good nights sleep in our suite we were somehow able to fit more food in with breakfast the following morning and spent a leisurely hour drinking coffee and helping ourselves to meats, cheeses, fruit and breads from the well stocked buffet in The Place on the ground floor. With lots of fresh and varied food, it was one of the best recent hotel breakfasts we'd had and set us up nicely for the day ahead.

Plant Appetite: El Nido Resorts, Lagen Island, Palawan, Philippines

El Nido, in the northernmost tip of mainland Palawan, Philippines, is composed of 45 islands with Lagen home to a magical eco-resort that takes your breath away.

2015-06-06-1433584685-9866304-BacuitBay.jpg

Not for nothing is El Nido known as the Philippines final frontier, as its tiny limestone islands, jutting out of its crystal clear seas are home to unspoilt eco-luxury resorts. There are three in the area I'm going - Miniloc, Lagen and the newly opened, Pangulasian Island. The only way to get to these is by taking a small plane from Manila, then catching a couple of boats, but once you get there, you're assured of complete tranquillity.

2015-06-06-1433584773-7771020-ElNidoBoatman.jpg

It's been an early start, just before dawn, and I'm still feeling sleepy, but the wind in my ears and the beautiful morning light makes it all worthwhile. The boat transfer from Lio airport in El Nido takes around 50 minutes, and Lagen Island is now coming into view. Completely surrounded by the water, the resort is dominated by huge limestone cliffs, which tower above its 50 rooms, and as I transfer to a smaller boat to make my landing, I'm told that I will be staying in one of the water cottages, perched on stilts jutting into the lagoon.

2015-06-06-1433584730-2787542-WaterCottagesElNido.jpg

There are also twenty forest rooms located at the edge of the jungle, three forest suites and nine beachfront cottages with a view of the lagoon. All are spacious with double beds and private bathrooms, and are built from timber recycled from old Filipino homes. The hardwood floors and furnishings give a sense of charm and quiet luxury and I really like the full length sliding glass doors that open to my own private veranda.

2015-06-06-1433585078-1917231-LagenIslandPool.jpg

Every night, I sip an exotic cocktail and watch the sun go down over Bacuit Bay and reflect that it's good to be alive. Once it's dark, there's no light pollution so stargazers can get clear views of heavenly wonders like the North Star, the Southern Cross, and the Milky Way. Even better, the only sound is the gentle lapping of the waves which sends me into a deep sleep.

2015-06-06-1433584910-164906-SunsetElNidoboatman.jpg

The cliffs are a sanctuary for a diverse variety of birds and mammals and it's their sounds that wake you up in the morning. If you fancy some exercise before breakfast then take the nature trail leading through the forest and spot all kinds of birds, including Palawan hornbills. Along the way, energetic macaque monkeys leap out at you, before you end up in a secluded cove for a refreshing swim, then it's a boat transfer back to the hotel.

2015-06-06-1433584875-9707895-ElNidoBeach.jpg

Food is pretty good here as Lagen Island serves only sustainable menus using greens organically grown from their gardens. Locally caught fish is a feature and both international cuisine and Filipino dishes are offered at the Clubhouse Restaurant. It's normally buffet style, although private romantic dinners at Lagen Island's Garden Chapel, by the beach, or in one of the many beautiful islands in Bacuit Bay can be arranged.

2015-06-06-1433584992-6206347-Smalllagoon.jpg

So what to do all day? There's a large pool, spa, massage cabana and, if you're into snorkelling, the crystal clear waters will ensure you're rewarded with stunning close-ups of the diverse marine life. Otherwise kayaks are provided so you can tour the shallow lagoon or paddle to beaches round the corner, exploring hidden caves. The island is PADI certified, with a complete range of diving equipment and offers a variety of dive courses. There are more than 20 diving sites, all easily accessible by boat nearby.

2015-06-06-1433584955-6680723-Scubawithfish.jpg

Island hopping is also an option as El Nido Resorts also own Miniloc Island and the newly opened eco-luxury property, Pangulasian Island, both less than an hour away. In reality, most of the 45 island and islets of El Nido are not much more than craggy limestone outcrops, jutting out of the sea like cathedrals, covered in tropical vegetation, with sandy coves at their base. Guests of Lagan can visit the restaurants on Miniloc and at Dibuluan Beach Club, or take a picnic to Entalula Beach Club. It's also worth exploring several natural attractions including Cathedral Cave, Cudugnon Cave, Snake Island, and the Big and Small Lagoons, all easily accessible by boat.

2015-06-06-1433585037-5347267-SnakeIsland.jpg

The point here, though, is relaxation and I can think of nothing better than sitting on the deck of your own private cottage, surrounded by the ocean, enjoying the dawn chorus. You really are close to nature here and more than 100 species of birds have been recorded, many of them migrating from as far away as Siberia to their winter feeding grounds in the tropics. The seas are also home to around 800 species of fish and El Nido is the nesting area of three species of endangered sea turtles. But you don't have to move to see marine life - if you keep your eyes focussed on the bay, you may see dolphins, whales, whale sharks and manta rays. Unfortunately you may also spot the boat that is coming to take home, so enjoy it whilst you can.

Five Step Creativity Plan to Increase Your Productivity and Have More Fun

5-Step Creativity Plan to Increase Your Productivity and Have More Fun-written by Maite Baron The Corporate Escape Coach

To me, creative ability is one of our greatest gifts. It's a magical process that enables us to bring into existence something that wasn't there before.

That's what makes being creative so exciting and life enhancing, especially as it doesn't have to be confined to obvious areas such as art, literature and music, but can be applied to every element of your personal, professional and business life.

However, despite being such a positive and beneficial thing, creativity is often viewed with suspicion. That's because it takes us outside our normal boundaries, which can feel uncomfortable or disorientating, suggesting a lack of structure and a sense of being out of control.

In the business world, perhaps not surprisingly, process-focused managers are often worried by those who show creative flair, believing that they will be hard to manage, unwilling to toe the corporate line.

For creative people, that means either having to curb this side of their nature and put up with being a 'square peg in a round hole', or walking out of the door before they're pushed.

Creativity is crucially important at a strategic level because business owners need to creatively adapt continually what their business does and how it does it to market needs.

While creativity has the potential to generate innovation and make things happen, it has to be encouraged - at all levels. It also something you must look to develop in yourself, if you want to experience success and a richer life.

The biggest obstacle is a widespread belief that creative people are born and not made. And though it's true that some people seem to have 'natural' creativity, anyone can make themselves more creative by learning to see the world in different ways.

So here's a five step creativity plan that will benefit both you and your business:

1. Start thinking of yourself as someone who is creative.

Like everything else in life, believing you can do something is an essential first step to make something happen. See finding ways to become more creative as an investment in your life and business, and not a time-consuming activity at additional cost.

2. Strengthen your creativity through practice.

Read articles and books about the subject, like Edward de Bono's 'Lateral Thinking', or look around the internet for creativity building exercises, and you will find that there are tools and techniques available to make yourself more creative. And don't worry if some of these seem peculiar or difficult at first - persevere and you will get better at applying them.

3. Be kind towards your creative progress.

Don't fall into the trap of being overly judgmental about your creative efforts. Acknowledge your progress, have fun and give your new ideas some oxygen so they can live and breathe in the external world.

4. Find your creative style.

Find ways of being creative that suit you. Writing, painting and music are obvious creative paths to go down, but there are other ways that may work well for you. Use the world around you to trigger creative thoughts. For instance, whenever you do something at home or work, think of how you could do it better, or differently. The beauty of this type of thinking is that you don't need to validate it, your aim is merely to get the creative juices flowing.

5. Be yourself.

Expose yourself to new ways of thinking and doing things. This may not always be comfortable, particularly if you are confronted with ideas that are the opposite of your own. Taking the time to see and understand someone else's point of view can be tremendously useful in loosening up your own ideas and becoming more flexible in your thinking.

Creativity brings excitement into your life, colour into your soul and life into your existence ... and the beauty of it all is that it's available to anyone who has the courage to explore it.

Now, I would love to know what do you think in the comments box below.

How do you use your creativity on a day to day basis?

Carey Mulligan is "expecting her first child" with husband, Marcus Mumford. Maybe.

The 30-year-old star has not yet confirmed the news, but multiple (unnamed, may we add) sources have confirmed to Us Weekly that the baby news is true.

Us Weekly reported that one "broadway" source told them: "They weren't planning on announcing, but she hasn't stopped working. Everybody around her is being very supportive."

The Great Gatsby actress appeared on the red carpet at the Tony Awards in NYC on Sunday 7 June, in a floor-length gown that didn't reveal a baby bump.

Mulligan wed the Mumford & Sons frontman back in April 2012.

In an interview with The Mirror in May, Mulligan admitted that she would like to have children.

She said, when asked whether she would like to start a family:

"Yeah, definitely. I don’t think you can ever be worried about your career when it comes to stuff like that. You’ve got to have some perspective."

Tinder Vs Parents: Writer Lets Parents Loose On The Dating App, Here's What Happens

Parents and technology: two things that, when brought together, can either cause complete chaos or result in internet gold.

Luckily for us, this one's the latter.

Lisa Bonos is single. So, she decided to let her parents, Dino and Nina Bonos, try out Tinder for the first time in order to find her a suitable match. (Brave, we know).

The pair have been happily married for 36 years, so - as you can imagine - much has changed since they were last on the dating scene.

parents use tinder

While her mum frantically swipes the phone screen with a huge grin on her face, her dad says: "27? Too young. I don't like his hair either."

The pair appear to be having a whale of a time, with both of their faces lighting up when Tinder tells them they've found their daughter a match.

"Wait what happened to that guy? He was good," says Nina, to which Dino replies: "I put him on the heart list".

Why I'm Deleting All My Dating Apps

If Tinder Was Released In The 1980s, It Would Look Like This

In an article for the Washington Post, Lisa Bonos reveals that it's hard for her parents to understand what it's like to be single nowadays.

"The uncertainty seems to boggle them," she writes. "They’re surprised to hear that a good first date might not lead to a second, or that singles routinely talk to people on dating apps but never meet up in person."

Her parents believe that the secret to finding lasting love is about getting to know the "whole person" and giving people a second, third, or fourth chance.

But when took Tinder for a spin, all of this was completely forgotten.

"Give them a Tinder profile to play with, and they’re just as judgmental as any 30-something," writes Bonos. "Their quick decision-making went something like this: Too old, too young, and hey, can’t anyone smile for the camera?"

But when asked if they thought it was an effective way to date (after finding six matches for their daughter) Dino and Nina's response was clear, but perhaps unsurprising.

"You've gotta be kidding?"

Single Dose Of HPV Vaccine Could Protect Against Cervical Cancer, Study Finds

$

A single dose of the HPV vaccine could be enough to protect against infections which cause 70% of cervical cancers, new research suggests.

Doctors found just one lot of the bivalent human papillomavirus vaccine may offer a similar level of protection as the two or three doses normally given.

Girls aged 12 to 13 are offered HPV vaccination on the NHS to protect against cervical cancer, the UK's most common cancer in women under the age of 35.

Experts said the findings could be a "game changer" in how women are vaccinated against infections which cause the disease.

Researchers in America analysed data from two trials involving more than 7,400 healthy women aged 18 to 25 years old and more than 18,600 healthy women aged 15 to 25 years from around the world.

They found "high vaccine efficacy" against HPV-16/18 infections regardless of the number of doses the women received, according to a study published in the Lancet Oncology.

The same result was also seen in women with no sign of HPV infection before or at the time of their first vaccination, suggesting the findings were relevant to "sexually-naïve girls" in the recommended age range for HPV vaccination, the report added.

How Delaying a Smear Test Nearly Left My Children Without a Mum

Co-lead author Dr Aimée Kreimer, from the National Cancer Institute, said: "Our findings question the number of HPV vaccine doses truly needed to protect the majority of women against cervical cancer, and suggest that a one-dose schedule should be further evaluated.

"If one dose is sufficient, it could reduce vaccination and administration costs as well as improve uptake. This is especially important in less developed regions of the world where more than 80% of cervical cancer cases occur."

In the UK, 2,900 women a year are diagnosed with cervical cancer - around eight women every day, NHS Choices said.

Professor Margaret Stanley, from the Department of Pathology at University of Cambridge, said the findings "could be the game changer for the implementation and uptake of these vaccines worldwide".

She said: "Delivering one dose rather than two or three would be easier in settings with little medical infrastructure and crucially cheaper, not just in vaccine costs but delivery costs."

Dr Mark Jit, from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said: "Many countries, including the UK, recently switched from giving three doses to giving two doses of the HPV vaccine to girls up to 14 years old.

"This followed findings from Costa Rica and other studies that two doses of vaccine may be enough to protect women from cervical cancer. The latest news that even one dose may be protective holds promise, although further studies are needed before we will be ready to consider a one dose schedule."

The Secret Lives Of 'Mum And Daddicts': Many Empty Nesters Develop Bad Habits When Kids Leave Home

A study has discovered a surprising side effect of empty nest syndrome.

Allen Carr Addiction Clinics polled 1,000 parents and found 40% of them admitted to increasing habits such as smoking, drinking and gambling since their final child left home.

The average spend on habits was £240 a month and one in four parents admitted to drinking booze during the day.

John Dicey, Global Managing Director of Allen Carr Addiction Clinics said: “It’s fabulous that empty nesters are enjoying their freedom after their children have left home, but some of these findings are alarming."

parents drinking

The report described these parents who turn to bad habits as "Mum and Daddicts".

In the poll, 67% admitted to hiding how much they spend each month from their family, and 13% lied to a family member about how much they spend on their bad habits.

Their partner (64%) was the person most likely to be deceived, followed by their adult children (30%).

The report also uncovered some extreme lengths parents go to in order to hide their habits from their family.

  • A quarter (24%) of middle-aged adults admitted adding alcohol to soft drinks to mask how much booze they were drinking.

  • 22% admitted indulging alone to avoid causing concern amongst the family and 16% said they have hidden junk food around the house.

  • Almost one in five (18%) borrowed money from outside the family to cover up a gambling debt.

  • 17% admit they have smoked behind the garden shed to avoid detection when their children return home for a visit.

  • Surprisingly, 24% of parents felt they had to lie so their children wouldn't be disappointed in them, but 10% lied because they didn't want to be nagged about their health.

When questioned on why they turned to these habits, 31% admitted it's simply because they had more time on their hands, and 23% said they "no longer feel they need to set an example" after their kids left.

However, 12% of parents said it was because they were lonely without children around all the time.

Dicey said: "There is much to admire and encourage on the harmless side of empty nesters enjoying their pre-retirement years.

"But it’s useful to be made aware that lying to your family and concealing consumption can be the beginning of some of the emotional and financial issues addiction can cause.”

The clinic also looked at the differences in regional habits and found that parents in London have the highest spend per month on their feeding habits, with an average bill of £394.27.

Scottish parents had the lowest spend of £85.89 per month.

James Harrison is a real life superhero, but he doesn't fly or run into burning buildings to save lives, he does something far more simple: he gives blood.

The 78-year-old pensioner has saved the lives of around two million babies by donating his rare type of blood for 60 years.

According to the above video by GeoBeats, Harrison underwent chest surgery as a teenager and needed a blood transfusion.

After his father told him that strangers had saved his life, Harrison vowed to do the same thing for others and began giving blood when he was 18 years old.

Once he began donating, doctors realised that his blood contained an anti-body capable of treating Rhesus disease.

At the time, Rhesus disease was causing deaths and birth defects in tens of thousands of babies worldwide each year.

Harrison agreed to participate in experiments after the incredible discovery about his blood was made and a vaccination for the disease was developed.

"A number of mothers have come up to me and said 'thank you very much for what you have done because I now have one, two, three heathy children'," Harrison comments in the video.

Dubbed the 'man with the golden arm', he estimates he's now donated blood more than 1,000 times.

He's even be able to help his own daughter, who had a healthy son thanks her father's blood.

What a guy!

When Thea Wilson woke up covered in mysterious bruises after a night out anyone would think she'd got plastered and fallen over multiple times.

But the 37-year-old had stayed sober the entire night and, mystified by the purple marks covering her body, decided to seek medical help.

Doctors first believed her condition to be a platelet disorder, but she was eventually diagnosed with a rare form of leukaemia.

leukaemia

"I had no idea where these bruises had come from," she said, according to The Metro. "They were big and purple and all up my arms and legs. I’d been getting little ones for a few weeks but nothing like that.

"At first the doctors thought it was a platelet disorder. When they told me I had leukaemia my world fell apart."

Story continues below...

Wilson was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukaemia (APL).

According to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, there are no specific symptoms of APL and it is common for the condition to be confused with other illnesses.

APL is caused by a lack of healthy red and white cells and platelets in the blood, it often develops quickly, with symptoms appearing over a matter of days or weeks.

Common symptoms include unusual bleeding and bruising, paleness, tiredness, breathlessness and infections

Wilson has been in remission for six months, according to The Metro.

Ear Piercing For Children: When Is The Right Age?

Redheaded Teenage Girl

I can honestly say I did not expect the many different reactions I encountered when I allowed my daughter to have her ears pierced for her 11th birthday.

Call me naïve, but I was completely taken aback by the polar opposite viewpoints we were subjected to – often unasked – when Emma unveiled her mutilated/pretty/disgusting/fabulous (delete as per your preference) ear lobes.

Before going any further, I should be absolutely clear that we are not a family where ear-piercing is a cultural norm. We are what Alastair Campbell would probably call a 'bog standard English family'.

I have no strong opinions (I know, unheard of) either way where it is accepted practice to have your baby's ears pierced at birth – indeed, I don't know enough about the reasons or ideology to make an informed comment. All I know is my daughter begged for almost a year to have her ears pierced.

"PleasecanIhavethempiercedpleasecanIhavethempiercedpleasecanIhavethempierced?" seemed to be the only conversation we had on a daily basis.

My husband was against it. His own very elegant mother has never had her ears pierced, and nor had his sister, so for him it was an alien concept anyway.

That said, when he met me I was supporting the rather (un)attractive three holes in each ear look (that's the 80s for you), so maybe he had a point about our daughter not following in her mother's footsteps.

To be honest I held out for a while. My 15-year-old daughter is adamant she won't ever get her ears pierced, so it wasn't as if Emma already had a precedent in her older sister.

But in truth Emma having her ears pierced provided me with a great - I really mean easy - 11th birthday present.

We were in the middle of a hugely traumatic time looking after my seriously ill mum, and Emma had been pretty much side-lined as I spent increasing amount of times with her Nanny.

One night, lying in bed, I thought what an easy option it would be to let her have her ears pierced – we could have a special "mother daughter" outing and I would once again be lovely mummy, not grouchy snappy tired mum who was always rushing between work and home and Nan's.

But the lovely warm feeling I got when Emma opened her birthday card to read we were off to get her ears 'done' after school that day trailed away when the deed was complete and we came face to face with a world post-Operation Ear Pierce.

You know how when you're pregnant complete strangers think nothing of touching your bump, or when you announce your chosen baby name and people feel it's their right to tell you why you shouldn't call it that?

Well the need to tell you, or show you, what they are thinking continues when you allow your child to get their ears pierced.

First up was my own mum, who managed to wrinkle her nose in distaste and make it quite clear she didn't think ear-piercing was acceptable for an 11-year-old.

My sister, who has two boys, shrieked: "Oh my word, I can't BELIEVE you've given in. Chavvyyyyy!" Thanks Michele.

My other sisters, who do have girls, were much more ambivalent about the whole process – 'been there, done that' was their reaction.

My still elegant and glamorous mother-in-law sided with my mum, but I had to ask her what she thought as she ate her lunch in silence the first time she saw Emma after her birthday.

"Well no, I don't think it looks nice at all, but I was so disappointed I didn't know what to say." Sometimes a silence does indeed speak volumes.

There was a range of comments, some funny, some frankly unprintable here, from people who were under the misguided assumption that we wanted their opinion.

But it was my friend, we'll call her Helen, who caused me the most grief. She rang me in such a rage the day after Emma's birthday to say her daughter – we'll call her Grace – wanted her ears pierced.

"Thanks a lot," she trilled. "I've got nothing left now you've caved in – Grace will have to get hers done."

Well actually, no, Helen - she won't. You'll have to just stand firm, as I do over other things that matter more to me than ear piercing. As my mum used to say – 'pick your battles'.

It's not my concern if something my child is allowed to do, yours is not. Different families do things in different ways. Your child has an iPhone 5C – my child doesn't. Your child has a Facebook account, my child doesn't. Like I said, pick your battles – but please don't pick them with me.

Top tips if you do decide to pursue the ear-piercing route.

1. Only let your child get their ears pierced if you are really comfortable about it and you are 100% behind it.

It's not fair to your child if other people are critical of it and you shrug your shoulders as if to say "I don't really approve but what could I do?" Your child will need you right behind her. If you don't want her to have them done, then you must stand firm.

2. Be honest about the process.

It hurts. Ok, only for a few seconds, but it hurts. She needs to know that. It's no good having one ear done and then not wanting to go ahead with the other one.

3. Do choose a reputable outfit to do it.

Sounds obvious but, do some preparation beforehand. Will your child be comfortable on a shop floor where others can watch, or is there another option where she can have them done in the privacy of a room away from the gawpers? Ask around and find out where other friends have used.

4. Agree beforehand with your child what will be allowed in terms of what she can wear.

Our rule was that Emma had to wear gold studs – and only gold studs – for at least six months post-piercing.

I also said she was not allowed dangly or cheaply-priced ear-rings for the foreseeable future. This was because I didn't want her putting cheap metal in her ear which may cause infection and I didn't want her going out looking like a pole dancer with lurid feathers hanging from her lobes. I have stood firm on this in the 12 months she has had her ears done.

5. Check what your daughter's school policy is on ear-piercing.
Most schools will allow single studs in each ear, but they often say they have to be removed or taped up for PE. It's worth checking.

Campaign Launched To Stop Parents Piercing Babies' And Toddlers' Ears

A campaign that launched to ban ear piercing for babies and toddlers is nearing its 30,000 signature target.

The petition on 38 Degrees was started by Susan Ingram, a mother who is calling for a minimum legal age for ear piercing.

She argues that piercing babies' or toddlers' ears is a form of "child cruelty".

On the petition page, she writes: "Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent's vanity.

"Other forms of physically harming children are illegal - this should be no different."

Those who have signed the petition are able to write their "reasons for signing" on the page.

Catherine H wrote: "Stop parents inflicting unnecessary pain on a child. Claire's Accessories are one of the worst offenders for piercing babies and toddlers ears. Make it illegal. Please."

Another mother said piercing young children's ears is the parents choice, not the babies' so there should be a minimum age limit put in place.

Claire M added: "Smacking a child is abuse, so how come sticking metal rods through their ears is not abuse?"

However, Dana C, who pierced her baby's ears at one month old, has commented on the petition page and disagreed completely, describing the petition as "absolutely and utterly pointless".

She wrote: "I am pleased that my parents got it done for me when I was a child and I have no regrets that they did. And as someone who doesn't like needles (but ironically, loves piercings) it was beneficial for me to get it done at a time I would not even recall in the future.

"Ear piercings on a child are not abuse, contrary to the claims being made on here. [They] are minutely painful and the baby will forget it.

"They also heal a lot better for young children than they do when they are older, and more 'mature' to make this decision."

Author Eleni Gage got her daughter's ears pierced at six months old and was called a range of names including shallow, self-centred, repulsive and horrible.

She says she made the decision to pierce her child's ears for cultural reasons - her husband is Nicaraguan and it was part of a culture to get it done.

Blogging on HuffPost, she wrote: "I pierced Amalía's ears for no other reason than because I thought it would make lots of people I love happy, including her someday."

Journalist Josie Golden discussed on HuffPost UK Parents whether there ever is a right age to pierce your child's ears.

She let her daughter have her ears pierced when she was 11 years old.

She wrote: It's not my concern if something my child is allowed to do, your [child] is not. Different families do things in different ways.

"Your child has an iPhone 5C – my child doesn't. Your child has a Facebook account, my child doesn't. Like I said, pick your battles – but please don't pick them with me."

What do you think? Is it up to the parents, or should you wait until they are older?

From Zayn Malik to Jared Leto, 2015 looks set to be the year of the male dye job... but we've never seen one like this before.

After losing a bet to his cousin, Hansel Qui cut and coloured his hair to perfectly resemble a pineapple. Top marks for forfeit originality.

Qiu took to Reddit to explain the situation: "Here’s a bit more background on the bet, in the beginning of the school year as motivation for school/fitness, my cousin and I decided to have a GPA/pushup bet.

"She ended up getting a 4.0 across the board, which I wasn’t even close to. Luckily she’s a pretty artistic and talented kind soul who IMO made my hair pretty cool!"

The 20-year-old student showed off his awesome new 'do in a series of pics on Imgur from a photoshoot posing with an actual pineapple (that he appears to be very enamoured with).

Qui loved his new style so much, he even wore a Hawaiian shirt to match. Now that's dedication...

Lost a bet with my cousin, this is the result.

Woman Gives Birth To First Ever Baby Born After Frozen Ovary Transplant

A Belgian woman who had her ovarian tissue removed due to a childhood illness has become the first person in the world to give birth after having her own frozen ovarian tissue transplanted.

The woman had her ovaries removed and frozen when she was only 13, after being diagnosed with the hereditary blood disorder sickle cell anaemia when she was five-years-old.

The 27-year-old, who has asked to remain anonymous, gave birth in November 2014, but details of her case were only recently published in the Journal of Human Reproduction.

frozen ovary

Dr Isabelle Demeestere was the doctor who lead the treatment to restore the woman's fertility.

The woman was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but moved to Belgium when she was 11.

She was told by doctors that her sickle cell anaemia was so severe that she needed a bone marrow transplant, using her brother's matching tissue.

Following the operation, she had to have chemotherapy to stop her body rejecting the foreign tissue.

This treatment can also destroy the ovary function, so her right ovary was removed and frozen.

Ten years later, the woman wanted to have a baby.

Doctors inserted four of her frozen ovarian fragments onto her remaining ovary and 11 fragments onto other sites in her body.

The woman began having periods five months later and became pregnant naturally two years later, at the age of 27.

She delivered a baby boy weighing just under 7lbs (3.1kg) in November 2014.

Dr Isabelle Demeestere now hopes the procedure could help other young people at risk of ovarian failure.

Dr Demeestere said: "This is an important breakthrough in the field because children are the patients who are most likely to benefit from the procedure in the future.

"When they are diagnosed with diseases that require treatment that can destroy ovarian function, freezing ovarian tissue is the only available option for preserving their fertility.

"However, the success of this procedure requires further investigation in very young, pre-pubertal girls, as our patient had already started puberty even although she had not started menstruating."

The woman's ovary is still functioning normally and doctors say there is no reason why she could not have more children.

Professor Simon Fishel, president of CARE fertility group, said: "This case is important and highlights a future direction of human reproductive technologies.

"It is not the first success using cryo-preserved ovarian tissue, but it is the first of its kind in relation to the case history.

"It further supports the need for the acceptance and wider development of ovarian tissue frozen storage and potential use in the future – either for fertility preservation or, indeed, a potential replacement of medication used post-menopausally."

Man Sticks Zipper On Brain Cancer Surgery Scar 'To Show It's OK To Laugh'

A man battling brain cancer has found the funny side to his condition, by sticking a zipper to the base of his surgery scar.

The cheery Reddit user posted the image online following surgery "to show others it's OK to laugh".

The 38-year-old recently underwent a crainiotomy (the surgical removal of part of the skull bone to expose the brain) to remove part of his medulloblastoma tumour.

View post on imgur.com

He says he pulled the stunt when heading to the clinic to have his staples removed and "made everyone smile".

"There was a tumour the size of a lemon at the back of my brain, and more tumours all the way down my spine," he explains.

"The remaining tumours along the spine are treatable using radiation and chemo. I’m going through radiation now and it is having very positive results!"

According to Macmillan Cancer Support, the condition is rare in adults but more common in children.

Medulloblastomas stem from poorly-developed cells and usually start in the cerebellum (at the base of the brain) and sometimes spread to other parts of the brain or spinal cord, the site explains.

When asked how he first discovered the cancer he wrote: "It did start with a headache. Then neck pain for about two months that started off minor and just kept getting worse.

"One day my vision became blurry, I was very dizzy, and my hearing started to become very muffled. Went to the hospital and had and x-ray, didn't show anything wrong. Had a CT, they noticed a part of my brain that was misshaped. Then an MRI, abracadabra....Tumor."

The man is still undergoing treatment, but he says that support from loved ones is helping him through it.

"I've have had a lot of support from family and friends which has helped greatly," he says. "I have noticed that the positivity does help. On days I was down, I felt like crap. On days that I laugh, I feel great. Which is partly why I shared this pic, to show others it's OK to laugh."

Autism Study Reveals Teenage And Older Parents Are 'Risk Factors' For Children With Autism

A large study on parental age and autism revealed teenage mothers and older parents are most likely to have children with autism.

Couples with large age gaps were also more likely to have children with autism.

The study involved more than 5.7 million children in five countries and was published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry

However, an expert at the National Autistic Society (NAS) has urged parents "not to worry".

Dr Judith Brown, Head of Autism Knowledge and Expertise, told HuffPost UK Parents: "This is a substantial piece of research with a large sample size which adds to our understanding of the complex causes of autism.

"However, we urge parents and those thinking of starting a family not to worry unduly about these research findings or allow them to affect the decisions they make."

autism

Researchers looked at autism rates among 5,766,794 children - including more than 30,000 with autism - in Denmark, Israel, Norway, Sweden and Western Australia.

Co-author of the study, Dr Sven Sandin, of the Icahn School of Medicine in New York, said: "After finding that paternal age, maternal age and parental-age gaps all influence autism risk independently, we calculated which aspect was most important.

"It turned out to be parental age, though age gaps also contribute significantly."

However Dr Brown said the study was not definitive, and there were a number of confounding variables that were not explained.

"More research needs to be done before any definitive conclusions can be drawn," she added.

“We still don't understand the full causes of autism, a lifelong condition which affects more than 1 in 100 people in the UK.

"But evidence suggests that autism does not result from a single cause and is rather a complex story of genes interacting with other genes, combined with environmental factors.“

Why Hearing My Son Giggle Will Be the Greatest Gift to Me This Mother's Day

In the study, mothers over 40 had a 15% increased risk of having a child with the syndrome, compared to those who were in their 20s, and rates were 66% higher in children of fathers over 50.

Meanwhile children born to teenage mothers were 18% more likely to have autism than children born to women in their 20s.

But researchers could not explain why these variables increased the chance of a child developing autism.

Dr Sandin said: "Although parental age is a risk factor for autism, it is important to remember that, overall, the majority of children born to older or younger parents will develop normally.'
